This book is bang-up for a beginning artist and useful to all every bit our skills develop.

I bought this book considering I was struggling with perspective, specially for congenital forms. The book starts with exercises on how to breakup a scene or object into its underlying shapes, and even the horizontal, vertical, and curved lines that make up those shapes. The book then moves on to capturing diverse textures (wood, brick, newspaper, etc.), and so sketching landscapes, capturing the human course, then details of v

This volume is great for a start artist and useful to all equally our skills develop.

I bought this book because I was struggling with perspective, peculiarly for congenital forms. The book starts with exercises on how to breakdown a scene or object into its underlying shapes, and fifty-fifty the horizontal, vertical, and curved lines that brand up those shapes. The book then moves on to capturing various textures (wood, brick, paper, etc.), then sketching landscapes, capturing the man class, and then details of various 'difficult' body parts (hands, faces, etc.). The book also discusses cartoon/painting outdoors (which I really enjoying) and working with unlike media. Each stage builds on and draws from the work done at previous stages so you lot menses nicely to more difficult forms without feeling like it is too hard.

Reyna encourages practising, suggesting different exercises to endeavour to reinforce the lessons learned. He also shows how to utilise your pencil to check line directions, and how to use a viewfinder to frame out scenes. Before reading this book I idea those techniques were 'cheating'; I have since discovered that if it is your work, you tin use any techniques yous like and that fifty-fifty seasoned artists use these tricks, simply it was from Reyna that both are adept practice.

Overall, a wonderful volume to have on the shelf (and to be used) by whatever artist.

Once someone wants to draw on a higher level than scribbles, doodles, and badly washed two-d characters, they begin to look for instruction books - and learn many of them are useless. They kinda go "step one, add these 3 lines. Step ii, add these 3 lines and look at the edges. Stride 3, terminate shading the complete picture - TADA, masterpiece!". This book forces you to do exercises on shapes, perspective, and all the classic exercises that a higher classroom would give you (diverse all the same life, landscapes Once someone wants to draw on a higher level than scribbles, doodles, and badly done two-d characters, they begin to expect for instruction books - and learn many of them are useless. They kinda go "step 1, add these three lines. Pace ii, add together these 3 lines and expect at the edges. Pace 3, finish shading the consummate moving picture - TADA, masterpiece!". This book forces yous to do exercises on shapes, perspective, and all the classic exercises that a college classroom would give you lot (diverse even so life, landscapes, portraits, etc). The information at kickoff is very much read-then-describe, and it'southward a lot of cubes, cones, etc. Each affiliate builds on the prior chapters. This is one of the best drawing didactics books out at that place, and if there was one book I would suggest anybody to showtime with before picking up the others, selection this upwardly starting time. Once you've gone through this, both reading the pages AND doing the exercises, you volition have the foundational knowledge of information (shape rules, perspective, lite/shadow, etc) and workmanship (you will learn your strengths and areas you need to improve, which ways you will exist able to go the best use out of instruction - instead of "mister artist, assistance me describe" you can say "fellow artist, tin can you help me meliorate my employ of sfumato to produce more realistic drawings? I found the "lessons" incredibly hard to follow and while I understand that the author wanted you to draw everyday objects, presumably because that'southward what you see, the actual objects were extremely tiresome.

I thing that I did take away from the book was regarding drawing straight lines which I had never really idea nearly earlier. That was an interesting lesson. But I never could get past the third or fourth because I didn't empathize what I was "supposed" to do.

I found the "lessons" incredibly hard to follow and while I sympathise that the author wanted you to draw everyday objects, presumably because that's what you lot see, the bodily objects were extremely boring.

One thing that I did have away from the book was regarding cartoon direct lines which I had never really thought about before. That was an interesting lesson. But I never could get past the 3rd or 4th because I didn't understand what I was "supposed" to practise.

"How To Depict What You Meet" is a bones-level drawing volume. I don't depict, but a girl that I mentor spends a lot of time drawing. I thought it'd exist fun to have drawing lessons together, just the instructor isn't very adept at explaining WHY we are doing the various exercises that he gives to us. I noticed that he was basically post-obit the lesson plan in this book, then I bought a copy. The book does a much better job of explaining the concepts than my art lessons instructor, and I have the feeling thursday "How To Draw What You lot See" is a basic-level drawing book. I don't draw, but a girl that I mentor spends a lot of time drawing. I thought it'd be fun to take drawing lessons together, but the teacher isn't very good at explaining WHY we are doing the various exercises that he gives to u.s.a.. I noticed that he was basically following the lesson plan in this book, so I bought a copy. The book does a much better job of explaining the concepts than my fine art lessons teacher, and I have the feeling that I could accept learned simply as much by using this book instead of taking lessons. (Hopefully you lot have access to a better instructor.)

Function One of this volume covers nineteen lessons which are progressive projects that build skill and confidence. He covered drawing bones shapes, perspective, shading, tones, drawing still life (indoors), drawing outdoors (which covered the differences from all the same life more than how to draw trees, etc.), and drawing people and faces. I wasn't as impressed with the educational activity in the drawing people department, but information technology certainly gave some basics to start from.

Office Two gave the basics on how to use watercolor, opaque watercolor, acrylic, and ink. He gives projects using black, greys, and white paints. This section had less instruction, simply I think information technology's mainly intended to introduce the thought of "drawing" using other media.

Overall, I felt that this book was very helpful and adult my skill at creating realistic-looking drawings. I'd recommend information technology to beginners who wish to acquire this skill.

This is a must read for a beginner in drawing.

Very helpful for me. I tin now sketch specimens from the forest and know what they are afterward. This book was a very productive employ of my time.

Authentic lessons

I similar how this helps me under stand techniques in cartoon make it realistic. This shows me where to improve me art from where I am to where I need to go.

I could never draw anything that looked real until I read this volume. At the ripe onetime historic period of...well, long by my high schoolhouse days, at present I tin describe a chair that looks similar a chair, a tree that looks like a tree. I didn't instantly turn into an expert artist, but no more misshapen mutant drawings! For me this is kind of miraculous, equally I had always believed I lacked the skill. I highly recommend this book for people who accept tried to learn how to draw with other methods that didn't work for them. I could never describe anything that looked real until I read this volume. I'grand non done with this book, mostly because it's a manual with exercises. However, it's been a skilful guide for someone like me who has been guideless my unabridged life. The exercises and explanations do really help

This book teaches how to draw starting with basic objects, which seem uncomplicated plenty, only the devil is in the details. You should stop reading and practicing sometimes.

Great place to get-go if you want to learn how to depict. Very first volume I ever bought nigh art.

Slap-up for intro into art to get a survey view of ideas. If you lot have followed a few podcasts, artist channels, chances you lot accept heard much of this.

I didn't learn a great deal more than from this book than I already knew. No doubt it would exist more than useful to a beginner, and it was nice to have some of my basic principles reinforced, but -- not to be big-headed or annihilation -- I do know how to draw a cube. Not to say I don't need practice...

I wish I could play with all the different mediums the author mentions, but fifty-fifty if I could afford them all, I don't think I could mess with ink launder in my current living situation. (I'm reluctant to even utilize char

Yeah, it comes off, but not ALL of information technology -- certainly non all of the compressed stuff.) I hope to nourish an "Intro to Different Mediums" form at a nearby art center to make upwards for this.

I had to express mirth during the composition sections, considering the compositions I liked all-time were the ones he pointed out as "bad." Well, we'll promise there'southward some flex in composition, or I'm doomed as an artist. ^^

Overall not a bad book; a little longwinded in the text, simply certainly better than the atrocious "How to Describe Cartoons" type of book you'll find at your local library.

My Christmas present this year :)

A good starter for cartoon/ painting. I used to draw/ paint a lot equally a child. Now wanting to pick information technology up again and to learn it properly. I intend to exclusively use sketching apps on tablet computers now, but that shouldn't make a difference equally far as learning from this book goes.

If you're a beginner in the arts and drawing figures, this a very good entry level guide. But I'm more of an intermediate so I really didn't become muchbfrom this volume. First-class volume. I might endeavour and buy it if I tin can information technology. Everything comes down to cubes, spheres, cones and cylinders in the end.
